Dec 14, 2003: 11 days 'til ChristmasThis time of year doesn't slow down, and despite the launch for This Way Up being over a month ago now, the team from saltlight are still busy singing at churches and evangelistic events.more>> Tom sang at CPC Surry Hills for the morning service last Sunday, and Vron performed two 30-minute sets of Christmas carols, secular songs, and Christian songs at "Christmas Unwrapped", an evangelistic dinner organised by the CPC workers' fellowship last Friday. Special thanks to Andrew for accompanying that night! Vron also joined Harvest Church and performed two items on Saturday as they celebrated Christmas with a carols night. Next up is a visit to the CPC evening service on the 21st, then preparing for KYC next year. We've been asked to sing two songs from the album at KYC, one of which will be during the Sunday night evangelistic session. Praise God for this opportunity and pray that we'll prepare well and work hard to fit in with the rest of the session to make sure the gospel message is clear and challenging.
Have a safe and joyous festive season. Remember, Christmas is meaningless without Christ!
Nov 17, 2003: Look and listenOur web developer has been working hard behind the scenes updating the site for your listening and viewing pleasure!more>>
If you weren't able to make it to the launch and haven't picked up your copy of the CD yet, make your way over to the track listing and take a sneak peek at the songs or check out the photos taken on the night of the launch itself. The CDs make great Christmas presents too, so if you have friends you want to encourage in their faith, or who might not have heard much about the gospel or Christianity before, make this a Christmas gift to remember. Order a copy or 5 today!
Nov 11, 2003: More to come...We're working on a few major updates to the site, including photos from the launch, some reviews of the night, samples of the tracks and lyrics. Stay tuned!more>>
God is continuing to open doors and to use This Way Up to communicate his gospel to more and more people, and it is awesome to see him work through even the most humble means. We would still really appreciate your prayers as we seek God's wisdom and guidance on how to serve him more effectively and as he continues to strengthen and extend his kingdom, and make the most of the opportunities he provides.
Nov 10, 2003: Keep praying!A number of people have called or emailed us, sharing about great conversations about the gospel and Christianity that they had with friends they brought to the launch. Praise God for these opportunities, and please keep on praying for them as they follow-up their friends and some start reading the Bible together with them.Nov 10, 2003: What a night! They came, they saw, they moshed. Well, the crowd surfing may have been limited to just one song, but the overall vibe at the launch was incredible!more>> The team would be the first to admit that like any typical gig, we had our share of minor issues on the night, but we were really blown away by the response of the audience to the album and to the concert. Everyone seemed to have a great time over supper, and we could only give all praise and thanks to God when we realised at periodic intervals before the doors opened that we needed to set out more chairs. We're still carefully doing all the admin and numbers, but we estimate that almost 500 people showed up on the night to hear 11 of the 14 songs from This Way Up performed live. I'm quite amazed that the audience switched modes effortlessly from hard rock, to ballads, to jazz with us, and just sat back and enjoyed the ride. Thanks to the musicians, stage crew, caterers, front of house, security, photographers, videographer, production team and especially the wonderful technical crew who slaved for hours getting the sound and lights set up. Thanks also to our faithful prayer warriors, the Knackledingers, and to everyone who supported us on the night. Special thanks to Diana, our marketing manager; Clem, our props manager; Suz, who organised the scrumptious supper; Tom, who excelled himself technically and organisationally in working with the tech crew on the sound and lights; and to both Tim and Tom for their music and pulling it all together on the night. It's been a privilege serving with you all! Of course, none of this would be possible without God, whose strength and grace gives us the means to do it, and whose gospel gives us the motive and inspiration.
Signing off for now,

Please let your friends know if they were concerned about it being a long night. And we would really appreciate your prayers in these final few days of preparation!Nov 2, 2003: Please keep praying! We are just days away from the launch now. Please keep praying for this event. In particular, pray for those coming and those thinking about coming. Pray for all the many hands, brains and voices involved in making the night flow smoothly, from caterers to stage crew to bouncers! Most of all, pray that the message of the songs will be communicated clearly and powerfully on the night. Tickets are still available, though running out fast!Oct 25, 2003: The CDs have arrived! With trembling and anticipation, we surveyed several deceptively plain, sealed boxes. Eagerly, we tore open one of them to find hundreds of perfectly pressed This Way Up CDs. Some of them have started to be distributed to churches, so if you haven't bought one yet, now's your chance. You can also pick them up at the launch on Nov 8.Oct 13, 2003: The countdown begins...What a hectic couple of weeks it's been! The team really is starting to understand what they mean by a "rollercoaster ride" and it's by God's grace that things are falling into place.more>> The CD is now at the manufacturers and we are eagerly awaiting the final product. We've confirmed a fantastic line-up for the launch. We've sung and played at the WSCCC Youth Evangelistic Event, Darling St Anglican, St Aidan's Hurstville, Chinese Christian Church's evangelistic dinner, CABC West Ryde's evangelistic night, MMSG (Music Ministry Support Group), Evangelical Chinese Church North Parramatta and the 5pm and 7pm services at St Thomas' Anglican Church, North Sydney. Phew!
Please take the time to read through the prayer points and commit the launch into God's hands.
Sep 30, 2003: Quick update on the CDGreetings! In answer to everyone's burning questions on how the CD's going, we're just as excited and eager as you are to see the finished product. We've got another week or so of work on the CD cover and liner notes. After this, the artwork and mastered CD are off to the manufacturers for mass production. We can't wait! The CDs will be available at the launch for pre-order pick-ups and sales, so if you haven't got a ticket yet, what are you waiting for??! Get a group together and buy some now! It should be a fantastic chance for yourselves and your friends to hear about God's salvation through song.Sept 23, 2003: Saltlight Community College updateThank you so much for your prayers and presence at the Saltlight Community College!more>> About a hundred people descended on West Sydney Chinese Christian Church on Saturday to participate in a variety of classes between the hours of 11am to 4pm. Some of the highlights included learning how to break the grip of an attacker in Daniel's self-defence class (it's amazing how you can prevent yourself from being picked up by using your pelvic floor muscles!), having a ball of a time as we learned the Viennese waltz (just like in Beauty and the Beast!) and cooking up a storm with the aroma of tiramisu and fried pork dumplings wafting through the church. There was so much going on throughout the church with other dance, massage, pilates, flute, guitar, floristry and photography classes. Adding the the buzz of the day was also a human jukebox playing old favourites and even a track or two from the This Way Up CD! To top this all off, we finished the day with an action-packed servant sale. Our auctioneer nearly lost her voice as she revved up the crowd and our helpful lads fetched a very high price in several bidding wars - they'll be busy putting up cabinets and doing tax returns and washing cars for the next week or so! The whole saltlight team had a fantastic fun-filled day and we hope you did too! Once again, we'd like to thank you for your generous support in helping us raise some much needed funds. Diana would also like to extend a special thanks to all those who taught a class, or "served" in the servant sale, or helped out on the day with tasks such as manning the canteen and looking after the littlies.
All up we raised $1546. Praise be to God!
Sept 2, 2003: The week that wasIt's been a typically busy week for the saltlight team. While we were busy sharing about This Way Up at SCEA on Saturday, and at Cornerstone in Concord on Sunday, we also managed to complete 93% of the mixing and start working on the CD cover!more>> We're back at Arcadia Solutions for one day next week to do some more work on the new creation track, 80 years, and we'll be mastering the CD with Rick O'Neil at Turtlerock Mastering on Sept 18.
We can't believe that the final touches are going on the album. Exciting stuff! Pray for godly wisdom and backbone, as we make tough make-or-break decisions, and for patience and humility, as we entrust the CD into the mastering engineer's hands!
Aug 26, 2003: Volunteers for the launchJust a reminder that if you're itching to get your hands dirty and get involved in the launch of This Way Up, then now's the time!more>> There's plenty that you can help with...

Saltlight Community College - Sat 20 Sept
Come to college for a day of fun and learning! WSCCC are holding a special event to raise some funds for the production of This Way Up. Come show your support and learn something new. Visit the Saltlight Community College pages for all the details! Aug 24, 2003: Two moreIn the past three days, we've had two more saltlight events, two more chances to share our vision for This Way Up, two more opportunities to make great music, and two more occasions to meet with our brothers and sisters in Christ in partnership for the gospel.more>> Last Thursday night, Ernest Chiang from Sydney Chinese Alliance Church in Rockdale organised a "southern churches info night" in which he invited representatives from a number of churches in the district to hear about the album. It was fantastic to see people from different churches come together because of their interest in both evangelism and music, and on this occasion they heard not only Vron singing On that day, but also a piano version of 80 years and the world premiere of In God's eyes - a tricky feat on solo piano and voice! Diana, Alice and AK were also there to meet people and share about saltlight. Special thanks to Ernie for organising it and to all those who helped with supper! On Saturday night, EFC Lindfield invited us to participate in their evangelistic music and café night. There was a great turn-out and it was a fun opportunity to break away from our usual repertoire - in this case, performing a set of secular songs and getting people to think about the search for joy in this world. After a talk by Andrew Lim, the saltlight band for the night - Tom, Tim, Vron, Sam, and Andrew - returned to perform five songs from This Way Up. It was so encouraging to work with the guys from EFC and we hope to do many more events in partnership with different churches in the future!
(Thanks also to Alex, who was at both of the events. Great to see you there!)
Aug 19, 2003: So long, farewellIt is with a great deal of sadness (and a fair bit of relief!) that we bid a fond farewell to our home studio - what has affectionately been dubbed the "Salt Cellar".more>> The good part is that this means we have just about finished tracking everything for This Way Up! Yay! The sad part is that we won't be inhaling any more dust, using any more doorbell-activated talkback, shifting mattresses from session to session to house different instruments, staying up till 2am on a regular basis in the concrete confines of Vron's basement rooms, or having a blast, night in and night out. It's been a tiring, harrowing, but rewarding experience, seeing all the different tracks come together and gradually make up a song... well, fourteen songs to be precise! Alas, all good things must come to an end, and it really did feel like the end of an era as Tom, Tim and Vron packed up the last traces of the Salt Cellar, seeing it transform once more into a humble basement.
It's not over yet though, and I'm sure that the Salt Cellar will live up to its name again some time in the future. Meanwhile, the fun doesn't stop there for the creative team... there's the little activities of mixing, mastering, promos and launch to go!
Aug 18, 2003: Home sweet homeIt was a really special Sunday yesterday as we shared and sang at what is the home church for quite a few people involved in This Way Up - West Sydney Chinese Christian Church in Strathfield.more>> Vron and Tim each sang a song and were interviewed by Diana at the 8:45 English morning service, and then Vron joined Diana, Alice and AK at the 5pm English evening service to sing again. It was really meaningful to see and hear the support from the people at WS, and to know that they are remembering us in prayer. Thanks to Karen, Andrew and Sam for the band back-up in the early morning as well.
Exciting times ahead as we continue mixing, bringing the CD cover and liner notes to fruition, and planning the launch!
Aug 15, 2003: A stroke of providenceHere's a bit of backstory to our search for a venue for the launch of This Way Up. The team has once again been shown first-hand how God provides for everything in his own timing and according to his plans!more>> **warning - long story ahead** Vron, Alice and Diana sat down about a month ago with a long list of potential venues in hand, after scouring the internet, past experience and recommendations. Phone call after phone call, email quote after email quote... it seemed like a never-ending cycle! Finding a location that had big open space, flexible seating, adequate power and facilities, a look and feel that suited This Way Up, and for a tiny budget proved to be harder than we anticipated, especially as getting responses from venues was quite slow. Nevertheless, we left no stone unturned and persevered for a few days. Out of the blue, Vron got in contact with Roo Bros Catering, who advertised on their web site that they could find you a suitable venue for any event. The guys there were extremely helpful, providing a quote for catering within the hour, and promising to look for venues for us over the weekend, with no obligations. This was pretty amazing in itself, as we didn't know them at all and had only come across them through their site. On Monday, Vron got a call from them telling her they'd found what they thought was a perfect venue. Vron was excited, but didn't want to disappoint them (after they were so helpful) by telling them we couldn't afford to use them as caterers. After chatting on the phone for a few minutes, Roo Bros actually suggested that we call the venue directly, bypassing them completely. They were certain that we could still get a good deal from the venue (outside of the caterer's rates). They assured Vron not to worry about the catering, and to remember them for future launches (we certainly will!) At around the same time, more and more of our leads turned into dead ends, so Vron prayerfully and nervously called the venue. After speaking to them briefly, they gave us a quote which was another $400 cheaper, as we were a non-profit organisation and therefore were eligible for artists' rates. Only one more thing remained - to actually pay a visit to the venue and see for ourselves. Alice and Vron dropped in one Sunday afternoon, took a quick look around and decided on the spot. A few days later, contracts were exchanged and the date was confirmed... November 8!
Stay tuned when we reveal the final details... including the name and location of the launch venue.
Aug 11, 2003: The next stage...Just a quick note asking you to continue to commit us and the project in prayer as we head back to Arcadia Solutions to start mixing the CD. Recording has been going well, and we've been keeping on track as much as possible. The next 3 weeks are HUGELY hectic, so pray for our health, our "normal" lives, that they don't suffer too much, and that everything we do will continue to bring glory to God.Aug 10, 2003: Vron@Burwood@FiveJust got home from a saltlight visit to Burwood@Five, a Presbyterian church in, you guessed it... Burwood! Isabella was songleading that night, and as a bit of extra fun, invited Vron to play keyboard with the music team. It was great to play with musos from a different church... to settle into their "groove" and make music for the Lord.more>> Isabella also interviewed Vron, before Vron sang On that day. This is really another amazing story of God's goodness. Vron had been battling an awful cold for 4 days - sore throat, blocked nose, chesty cough, constricted airways - the works! Knowing that she was singing at this service today (and again on Monday night at a different gathering), Vron spent all of Saturday and Sunday morning keeping as quiet as possible, and croaking out what conversation she could manage. However, when it came to answer the interview and to sing the song, Vron's airways had cleared up immensely... with almost no trace of a cold at all.
Thanks to those who helped keep Vron "quiet" over the weekend, and praise God that the whole service, the singing session and the saltlight parts were encouraging to us and the congregation and glorifying to him.
Aug 6, 2003: We've found a venue! Thanks for all those who have been faithfully praying for us as we searched for a venue for the launch of This Way Up. The contract is being exchanged this week.more>> We're so excited that we've found somewhere suitable in terms of location, size and price. God continues to show his abundant provision. There is an amazing story to go along with the venue search, so keep your eyes peeled for another update soon, together with lots of fresh news and prayer points, in the Knackledingers' prayer letter. (If you haven't already, join the Knackledingers now.)
For now though... keep November 8 firmly in your diaries!
July 31, 2003: Cubby housesDo you remember being a kid and building cubby houses out of old sheets, chairs, tables and the like? Well, we've built our very own cubby house from old mattresses in Vron's basement.more>> With a bit of creative positioning, it's turned into our very own vocal studio! This room within a room, which stands just over 6 ft, and is 2m by 1m inside, might be claustrophobia-inducing, but more importantly, it deadens the sound in the otherwise concrete and brick basement. Praise God that we are on time with all our tracking. We've had four sessions of vocals so far, with one more tonight. Thanks to Daniel, Angeline, Clayton, Isabella, Tom, Tim, Jonathan and Vron, whose voices all appear on the album, and who suffered the long hours, repetitive fine-tuning and water guzzling.
Next up: finalising string and brass arrangements with Tom and Tim, while Vron turns her hand back to producing and finalising the date and venue for the launch of This Way Up in early November.
July 28, 2003: Second interviewThe second in our series of interviews with saltlight members is now up!Read the interview. July 24, 2003: Which mic?To hire, or not to hire, that is the question...more>> Whether 'tis more effective for the CD to outlay a small amount of money to get a potentially better sound, or to content ourselves with our own equipment. To search, to choose; to choose, perchance to combine good quality with responsible budgeting. Ay, there's the path, for in our choosing, we have settled on a microphone that will give us the results we need, but is affordable to hire.
This weekend, we start tracking vocals. For those of you who are technically inclined, or just extremely curious, we'll be using an AKG C 414 B-ULS. Hopefully and prayerfully, we'll be able to get a great sound that will add to the quality of This Way Up and help us to create a more effective tool for proclaiming the gospel.
July 21, 2003: The deep southSt Martin's in Blakehurst invited us to come and perform two songs for them at an evangelistic service they had yesterday morning. With a few members of the team incapacitated due to work, uni camps and family, Vron rounded up some of our associate members to accompany her down to the deep south.more>> The sermon was on "Life's Turning Points" and was a challenging look into life and its ups and downs, and how God views the only true turning point as the repentance and faith that comes from responding to the gospel of Jesus Christ. We heard a moving testimony from Jo, one of the members of the congregation, and Vron performed On that day and 80 years on the piano, accompanied by Isabella Wong on flute and backing vocals, and Andrew Leung on acoustic guitar. It was a once in a lifetime experience, as 80 years might never be performed on piano and in the key of Eb again!
It was fantastic to work together with our brothers and sisters in Christ in the name of the gospel, and so encouraging to plan our next visit there in a couple of months to share a little more about This Way Up and the upcoming album launch.
July 19, 2003: Move over, Billy Joel and Eric Clapton! Our home studio was shifted from Vron's basement on Friday night, as Tom and Vron descended on St Clement's in Mosman to do some more tracking for the CD.more>> It was an ambitious goal - record the piano parts for all six piano-based songs, ranging from complex rhythmic concoctions à la Ben Folds, to epic piano ballads and a bit of jazz thrown in as well. Despite the chilly temperature (we did find a heater that, alas, did not seem to do much actual heating) and just two people sharing the combined roles of engineer, producer and pianist, it was a really productive night. Tom and Vron ignored all signs of hunger and fatigue and ploughed on till 3am the following morning. The Yamaha grand had got a good workout and the tracking was completed. Praise God! Over a few nights the previous week, we also got the basic tracking done for guitar. It proved to be a time-consuming task, and the dreaded "buzz" seemed to have followed us from Arcadia Solutions, where we recorded bass and drums. However, thanks to Tim's patience as we asked him to repeat sections over and over again on both electric and acoustic, and a brilliant little set-up consisting of a cubby-house of mattresses and a PA speaker hooked up to Tim's guitar amp, it all went pretty smoothly and the end result is sounding fantastic.
We're all really excited as we prepare to record vocals starting from Saturday, July 26. Please keep praying for us!
July 14, 2003: First interviewGet to know the people behind saltlight! The first in a series of interviews with saltlight members is now up. Read the interview.July 13, 2003: Our first official visitThis morning, we were at the familiar setting of Kingsgrove Beverly Hills Baptist Church, with whom Diana, our marketing guru, has a long association.more>> She, together with Tim and Vron, visited the morning service and took some time to share about what was happening with the CD and with saltlight in general. Two more performances by Tim and Vron of 80 years and On that day, respectively, were interspersed with interviews and a time of prayer. It was a truly international service, with Nathan, visiting for 8 weeks from Nashville, leading the time of worship in song. What an amazing thing to remember that we are all one body in Christ! We were so encouraged to hear that the congregation have been regularly praying for us at their church prayer meetings! It's exciting to see the word spread throughout Sydney and see people truly be inspired and challenged to share in this gospel ministry.
Thanks also to our "moral supporters" (a much nicer term than groupies!), Vanessa and Clementine!
July 8, 2003: Competition resultsFind out who won a copy of This Way Up in our last competition, and the runners-up!July 8, 2003: Recording scheduleAt our creative team meeting on Monday night (a fancy way of saying that the songwriters were casually gathered around a coffee table, talking), we put together a hectic recording schedule.more>> Locations are scattered all over Sydney, from "the basement" at Vron's house to St Clements in Mosman. Tom, Tim and Veronica will be doing a lot of the basic tracking themselves, but with a talented group of Christian friends and musicians helping out, we'll also be able to create some great sounds for the other instruments and vocals. If you'd like to pray for us specifically on certain days, this is our recording schedule:
<<hide July 7, 2003: This Way Up on the roadBook out your diaries – saltlight is coming to a church near you!more>> It will be a tiring but fantastic road ahead of the team as we visit churches to share about saltlight and provide music for some evangelistic events and services. Almost every weekend throughout July and August has at least one visit planned. Different combinations of both the creative team and the production team will be at each service or event, playing a selection of songs from This Way Up. It's encouraging to know that so many Christians around Sydney are just as excited about this avenue of sharing the gospel as we are! The Upcoming events page has all the latest details. July 7, 2003: Behind the scenesWe'll be bringing you a series of short interviews so you can get to know some of the people involved in This Way Up and what happens in the background to get everything happening with the CD. Our first interview will be up in a few days, so check back soon!June 25, 2003: From the studio...To all those who have inundated us with the burning question over the past few days, the answer is YES! We did it!more>> Last Thursday, by the grace of God, we managed to finish the basic tracking of drums and bass for the 10 songs we needed to do. All things considered, it was a pretty smooth session, and despite the potential stress and tight schedule of actual recording versus set-up time, everyone did a great job. Let me tell you, for a producer who usually stays cool, calm and collected, hunting down and eradicating buzz is Veronica's worst nightmare! Thanks to Tim, Tom, Pete, Andrew and Michelle - you all put in 110% and your listening ears and nimble fingers were much appreciated. We're taking a couple of weeks off, but then we're in full swing with overdubs and solos, and tracking guitars, piano, vocals, strings and brass for 6 weeks.
At the end of the day, we might not have run according to our plan, but definitely to God's plan. Keep praying for us!
June 18, 2003: Win a CD!Come up with a catchy name for our faithful group of prayer and financial supporters and you could win a copy of This Way Up, autographed by the three songwriters!more>> If you are on the prayer list, you are eligible to enter the competition. If you are not already on the list, you can subscribe now and receive regular updates by email about saltlight news, events, and prayer points. Submit your entries to thiswayup@saltlight.com.au.
Entries close on July 2 and the winner will be announced on July 4. You can enter as many times as you like.
June 18, 2003: Bondi Junction... here we come!Arcadia Solutions at Bondi Junction will be invaded by an enthusiastic group of musicians on Thursday 19th June! The TWU band are descending on the studio to lay down the bass and drums tracks for This Way Up.more>> Tim, Tom and Veronica will be spending the day with Michelle Goldsworthy (sound engineer), Pete Kohlhoff (bass), and Andrew Massey (drums). Ten of the 14 tracks on the CD require bass and drums, so it will be a huge feat for us to record all these parts in a single 10-hour session, but we know that by the grace of God, anything is possible.
It's been a long road to get to this stage - sometimes fraught with creative blocks (both Tim and Vron's last songs to be finished were the first ones they started), obscure rhymes (you can't get a more inspired line than "reading a book, cooking a chook"), and tight deadlines. The gospel has kept us going so far though - both in terms of the lyrics for the songs we've written and just the great desire to make Christ known and to bring people to face up to the fact that a choice needs to be made. It's also the gospel that will keep us focused for the next few months, right up until we present it at the CD launch in November.
June 16, 2003: Collaboration songThanks for your prayers and praise God that the collaborative song, which is the turning point of the whole CD, has finally been written!more>> It was a huge challenge for Tim, Tom and Veronica to combine their different styles and methods of songwriting and yet convey the message that there is a choice to be made - that the gospel of Jesus demands a response! After several hours locked in Vron's basement and by the grace of God, we emerged with Turn.
Keep praying for us as we work on polishing the lyrics and arrangement. We look forward to laying it down for the CD.
June 10, 2003: Recording and rehearsalsOn May 31, we started recording vocals for the first and last acapella tracks. Thanks for all your prayers - we managed to lay down all of Angeline's parts before she left to go overseas.more>>
We also had our first rehearsal with our bass player and drummer last night and it was great to hear the music come alive with the band. It's exciting to know that through God's providence and grace, This Way Up is shaping up to be a really strong album, both musically and lyrically.
May 28, 2003: Saltlight dinnersSpecial thanks to Suzanne and Angeline for their hospitality in hosting two of the four info dinners and to everyone who made the effort to travel far and wide!more>>
You can check out some photos that are now up in the Gallery, and there'll be more photos to come.
May 26, 2003: RICE feteWe will be performing selected tracks from This Way Up at the Rice Inter-Church Evangelism fete at Concord Public School on Saturday May 31, 12:30pm to 1:00pm.May 20, 2003: This Way Up gets a mentionThis Way Up is on the front page of Niphal (a Christian Web Design Community)!May 10, 2003: Continuing preparationsThe saltlight team has been busy with preparations for the Dinner & Info nights, upcoming rehearsals, and this web site.more>> We are scheduled to start recording This Way Up on June 19th.
